Matter– Matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume.Matter exists in various states Solid, Liquid and Gas.
Solid– Solid matter is composed of tightly packed particles. A Solid will retain its shape; the particles are not free to move around.
Liquid– Liquid Matter is made of more loosely packed particles. It will take the shape of its container. Particles can move about within a liquid, but they are packed densely enough that volume is maintained.
Gas– Gaseous matter is composed of particles packed so loosely that it has neither a defined shape nor a defined volume. A gas can be compressed.
Classification of matter-Matter classified into two parts.
1.Pure Substance-Matter having an invariant chemical composition and distinct properties. They are further divided into two parts.
- Element– Fundamental substance; cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical methods.
- Compound– Substance composed of two or more elements in fixed proportions; can be separated into simpler substance and elements only by chemical methods.
2.Mixture– Matter consisting of two or more pure substance that retain their individual identities and can be separated by physical methods. They are further divided into two parts-
- Homogeneous– Mixture having a uniform composition and properties throughout.
- Heterogeneous– Mixture not uniform in composition and properties throughout.
