Blood Components- There are four basic components.
- Plasma– Plasma is the liquid portion of blood. About 55% of our blood is plasma.Plasma is about 92% water. It also contain 7% vital proteins and 1% mineral salts, sugars, fats, hormones and vitamins.
- RBC(Red Blood Cells)– Red blood cells, also called erythrocytes, are cells that circulate in the blood and carry oxygen throughout the body. The RBC count totals the number of red blood cells that are present in your sample of blood.
A normal RBC count would be:
Men-4.7 to 6.1 million cells per microlitre
Women-4.2 to 5.4 million cells per microlitre
- WBC(White Blood Cells)-White blood cells, also called leukocytes, fight infection.They are a part of the immune system that helps fight infection and defend the body against other foreign materials.
- Platelets- Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. If one of your blood vessels gets damaged, it sends out signals to the platelets. The platelets then rush to the site of damage. They form a plug(clot) to fix the damage.
